El Estanque del Retiro is the man-made lake in one of my favorite places in Madrid, the sprawling El Parque de Buen Retiro. The shoreline features a statue honoring Alfonso XIII, the king of Spain in the last quarter of the 19th century. He died before his 28th birthday, leaving his unborn son as his successor. I enjoy framing my photographs naturally, and my ultra-wide angle lens allowed me to keep the wrought iron and monument in focus.
